Posting to Newsgroups
If there's one thing you can say about Usenet, it's that... um... it's
full of really pedantic people, big egos, and lots of people that don't have a
clue. It takes a little while to work out why this is a Good Thing. But it is.
A few of the newsgroups that I regularly waste time on...
| dur.general | Typically full of people moaning about Fortran, abortive Europe
threads, the occasional flamewar about religion, the yearly flames about
netiquette and vast tracts of innuendo. |
| dur.test | This
usually has a couple of test posts turned into rhyming cascades, as well as
random games of Mornington Crescent (and other things. It's not easy playing
Twister entirely in ASCII you know.) |
| alt.dur.general | What you get when durgers graduate and need somewhere to continue
posting rubbish to. It tends to involve Linux, and a lot of innuendo. |
| alt.dur.mornington-crescent | It's not unusual to find the odd game of Mornington Crescent going
on here. |
| dur.dsu.sf+f | The newsgroup for the Science Fiction and Fantasy society generally
consists of discussions of how bad the last film was, unnecessary (but
accurate) quoting, the odd on-topic discussion (sorry), and, amazingly,
innuendo. |
| alt.fan.barry-cornelius | A newsgroup dedicated to the one person in the university who can
make computers work, and usually containing posts from people whose computers
don't. |
| alt.dur.fortran-is-evil | Moans about everyone's "favourite" programming language are welcome
here, as are cries for help (and if we ever get Durham's news server to see
the group, you might even get a reply :) ). Work in progress... |
| alt.should.be.doing.labs | There really needs to be more "alt.should.be" groups... |
| rec.arts.sf.written.robert-jordan | rasfwrj (pronounced, arguably, "rasserfrudge" is the Wheel of Time
newsgroup where people know things. It's also a good place to observe
netiquette... |
